The Continental Collision

The Continental Collision:
Continental collision is a phenomenon of the plate tectonics of Earth that occurs at convergent boundaries. Continental collision is a variation on the fundamental process of subduction, whereby the subduction zone is destroyed, mountains produced, and two continents sutured together. Continental collision is known only from this planet and is an interesting example of how our different crusts, oceanic and continental, behave during subduction.
Continental collision is not an instantaneous event, like a car crash, but may take several tens of millions of years before the faulting and folding caused by collision stop. Collision between India and Asia has been going on for about 50 million years already and shows no signs of abating. Collision between East and West Gondwana to form the East African Orogen took about 100 million years from beginning (610 Ma) to end (510 Ma). Collision between Gondwana and Laurasia to form Pangea occurred in a relatively brief interval, about 50 million years long.
There are other modes of mountain formation and orogeny but certainly continental collision is one of the most important. Rainfall and snowfall increase on the mountains as these rise, perhaps at a rate of a few millimeters per year (at a growth rate of 1 mm/year, a 5,000 m tall mountain can form in 5 million years, a time period that is less than 10% of the life of a typical collision zone)
The presence of these minerals demonstrate subduction of continental crust to at least 90–140 km deep.

Geological Plates in Pakistan

Geological Plates in Pakistan:
The lithosphere is broken up into what are called tectonic plates. In the case of the Earth, there are currently seven or eight major (depending on how they are defined) and many minor plates. The lithospheric plates ride on the asthenosphere. These plates move in relation to one another at one of three types of plate boundaries: convergent, or collisional boundaries; divergent boundaries, also called spreading centres; and conservative transform boundaries. Earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountain-building, and oceanic trench formation occur along these plate boundaries. The lateral relative movement of the plates varies, though it is typically 0–100 mm annually.

The Unusual Mountain Vista

The Unusual Mountain Vista:
The "continental collision" of the four mountain ranges of the world the Himalayas, the Karakorums, the Hindukush and the Pamirs in the North of Pakistan gave birth to the thickest cluster of the highest peaks and largest glaciers on Earth in an area of about 500 X 350 km, while a series of low mountain ranges of Suleman, Pub, Kirthar and Makran emerged from North to Southwest and to the South of Pakistan.
This collision emerged more than 700 peaks higher than 6000 meters. These include 06 out of the 14 peaks above 8000 meters on Earth, namely the second highest rock pyramid - the K-2 (8611m), Nanga Parbat (8125m), Hidden Peak, Gasherbrum I (8068m), Broad Peak (8047m) and Gasherbrum II (8035m), Broad Peak (Central) (8016m).
The statistics are simply baffling ! 50 of the world's 100 highest peaks are in Pakistan. This includes 06 of the world’s 14 peaks above 8000 meters. K-2 (8616 m) is the second highest on Earth. Peaks from 7501-7999 meters are 33, peaks from 7001-7500 m are 135, peaks from 6501-7000 m are 187 and peaks between 6001-6500 m are 351, whereas, peaks from 4000-6000 meters are countless.
Alone in Baltistan & Hunza, there are more than 100 peaks above 18,000 feet. Literally, most of their base camps are higher than the summits of all the peaks in Europe. The world’s thickest cluster of highest peaks is found in & around Concordia. This unique piedmont glacier is located in the south of K-2 and domains 16 tallest peaks of the world within just a radius of 08 miles (12 km).
Pakistan's glaciated region covers more than 15000 Sq/Km. The 05 longest valley glaciers of the world, are also in Pakistan whose total length exceed 315 Km. These include the Siachen (75 km), the Hispar (63 km), the Biafo (61 km), the Baltoro (60 km) & the Batura (58 km) The Biafo-Hispar glacial corridor of 116 Km is the longest on Earth. No mention of small countless glaciers and their tributaries. There are numerous glacial lakes which are famous for their scenic value, blue waters and trout fishing. Prominent among these are Phander, Kachura, Sadpara, Lalusar, Sadpara, Deosai, Saiful Maluk and Mahodand.
Our mountains domain the enchanting valleys of Kaghan, Swat, Chitral, Ghizer, Ishkoman, Gilgit, Hunza, Naltar, Shigar, Khaplu, Skardu and Kashmir with splendid passes like Shandur, Khunjerab, Lowari, Kachikhani, Burzil and so on …! The Deosai Plateau in Western Himalayas is located at 4500 meters (14760 ft), thus making it the world’s highest plateau. This magical place marked with sporadic wind storms, multicolored flowers and the extinct – Himalayan Brown Bear and Golden Marmots.
This enormous mountain wealth makes Pakistan an important mountain country in the world, a paradise for mountaineers, adventure seekers & nature lovers, the world over. The compelling charm of these high, challenging endless ocean of rugged rock and ice pinnacles lure a large number of tourists every year from across the five continents of the world.
Our mountain ranges have the most rare species of flora and fauna. Our wildlife includes the Snow Leopard, Himalayan Brown Bear, Marco Polo Sheep, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Kashmir Markhor, Himalayan Ibex, Afghan Urial, Astore Markhor and Blandford Urial. … etc.
The vegetation in the higher ranges in the North is less due to high altitude and less rainfall, however in the South there is heavy precipitation and vegetation. The gateway to these great mountain ranges is Islamabad from where air and road links are available for Gilgit, Skardu, Chitral and Swat, whereas, Kaghan & Kashmir valleys have road links only.

A Unique Junction - Where Great Mountain Ranges Meet

A Unique Junction - Where Great Mountain Ranges Meet:
On Karakoram Highway Thalechi is a small place before Jaglot, which offers superb view of Nanga Parbat, dominating the whole region. Our next place of interest is the unique venue where three great mountain ranges of world make a knot. Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindu Kush, with their famous highest peaks (in Pakistan), Nanga Parbat, K-2 and Trich Mir, meet here and at almost on same place River Indus, flowing down from lofty mountains of Skardu, joins with river Gilgit, one its main tributaries.
The place is well defined with a plaque mentioning as:
THE JUNCTION POINT OF THREE GREATEST MOUNTAIN RANGES OF THE WORLD
It narrates, "FROM HERE YOU ARE SEEKING THREE MIGHTIEST MOUNTAIN RANGES OF THE WORLD. GREAT HIMALAYAS END IN THE SOUTH AND EAST OF INDUS RIVER. KARAKORUMS ARE ENDING IN THE NORTHEAST OF GILGIT RIVER. KARAKORUMS ARE ENDING IN THE NORTH EAST OF GILGIT RIVER. WEST OF GILGIT / INDUS RIVER IS THE HINDU KUSH RANGE".
It is very easy to define the boundaries of Himalayas, as the mountains encircled on the left bank of River Indus are main peaks and foothills of Himalayas. While bifurcation of Karakoram and Hindu Kush is not clearly defined, however, most of the geologists are agreed that all these ranges are sub ranges of Himalayas and they usually call them as trans-himalayas.
The place due to its unique importance is very interesting but unfortunately most of the domestic tourists pass bye this place without making a stop here as most of the people do not know about this place and most people driving by public transport also do not have an opportunity to have a stop there.
A short break at this point is worth and one does not only feel standing at a unique place but the place also offers a wonderful landscape of the area.
After this point we reach at Gilgit, which is the most important town, garrison.
